Strategic Planning

Strategic Planning is critical in the process for a rehabilitation facility seeking a well-regarded CARF International accreditation. PowderHorn Consulting offers a cost-effective means of meeting the CARF requirement of  1.C. Having a Strategic Plan.

Senior Consultant Scott Graham has successfully guided over 25 organizations, for-profit and nonprofit, through this critical step of accreditation during the past 14 years. Trained in the Grove Consulting strategic planning process when he consulted with the Strategic Planning Department of Johns Hopkins Medical System, Graham applies the guiding principles of Grove when consulting with clients.

Grove’s process is interactive and requests participation from all organizational team leaders in providing input. Graham displays Grove’s 2’ by 4’ templates on the walls of the strategic planning setting, and participants add their strategic ideas using post-it notes. The goal is reviewing and providing input to:

  • Environmental scanning (external pressures on an organization), and
  • Internal examination of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to the organization.

Upon analysis of these two elements, the team develops Five Bold Steps that become the backbone of the strategic plan for the next three years.  In order to meet the CARF standard of strategic planning in setting the priorities for an organization, participants prioritize the Five Bold Steps. Graham then instructs the organization on how to “build out” the Five Bold Steps into operational plans that are the essence of CARF requirements.

CARF International survey teams routinely show regard with the posting of the Five Bold Steps templates in organizations’ front offices.
